Open AI Key — Connect & Enable Automatic AI Summaries

What this page is for #

The Open AI Key screen connects your site to OpenAI and, with one checkbox, turns on automatic invisible AI summaries for new or updated posts/pages. It’s a simple, focused settings page under the GEOmatic AI menu.

Fields & controls you’ll see #

  • OpenAI API Key (text field)
Paste your personal API key. A helper note links to OpenAI’s account page where keys are created.
  • Enable automatic generation (checkbox)
When enabled, the plugin auto-generates an invisible AI summary on publish/update—nothing new appears to human visitors, but AI systems get a clearer, machine-readable digest of each page.
  • Save Settings (button)
Saves your key and toggle. A confirmation notice appears after saving.

Tip: If you’re following the 1-minute setup wizard, its “Open key page” link brings you right here to paste your key.

What happens after you save (non-technical) #

  • Background key check & clear status
The plugin performs a lightweight validity check for your key in the background and stores a compact status used by the Debug screen (you’ll see a small “Key valid / Key invalid” badge there). This helps you confirm the connection without diving into logs.
  • Hourly sanity check
To keep things efficient, the plugin rate-limits these checks and remembers the last check time/message you’ll later see summarized in diagnostics.
  • Auto-summary on publish
With the toggle on, publishing or updating content triggers the invisible summary generation—hands-off for editors once it’s configured.

Protections against common mistakes #

  • Accidentally pasted a key in “Project ID”?
If you ever put an API key into the Project field elsewhere, the plugin can detect and move it to the right place automatically, or warn you and clean the field.
  • Project-scoped keys
If you use OpenAI’s Project ID, the plugin can send it as an optional header. It also avoids sending a malformed value to prevent “no such project” type errors. (Project ID is configured in the API Providers section, not here.)
  • Key cleaning
Invisible characters (like NBSP/zero-width spaces) are removed before testing, which eliminates many copy-paste issues.

Where to test the connection instantly #

While this page focuses on storing your OpenAI key and enabling auto-summary, you’ll also find a Test button for OpenAI in GEO Local Business → API Providers. Use it anytime to run a quick connection check without leaving the admin.

Typical workflow this page enables #

  1. Open “Open AI Key” from the GEOmatic AI menu.
  2. Paste your OpenAI API key and tick “Enable automatic generation.”
  3. Save settings and continue working normally—summaries now generate automatically on publish/update.
  4. If needed, glance at Debug to confirm the key status badge or use the Test button in API Providers for an instant check.

Good practices (buyer-friendly) #

  • Use a dedicated key for your site so you can rotate it independently if needed. (You can update the field here anytime.)
  • Enable auto-generation as your default—editors don’t need to remember anything; summaries are handled for them.
  • Project ID only if you need it: if your OpenAI account uses projects, set the ID in the API Providers block (not on this page). It helps avoid avoidable auth errors.
